Assignment 5: Make a Clock

Due: Tuesday, July 28, 2026

Sketch a clock, then bring it to life in Astro with an LLM

Today’s exercise is based on a segment in Kelin Zhang’s “AI Studio” course @ RISD.

Make a clock. A “clock” is anything that measures time. It should be interesting to you, and it does not need to be complicated. Sketch it, design it, and use GitHub Copilot or another LLM to bring it to life inside Astro.

Some clocks to get you thinking: kala.watch, time.non-objective.works, “Untitled” (Perfect Lovers), and clocks.dev.

  • Sketch and thumbnail (about 30 minutes). Get a few ideas down before you touch code.
  • Code the selected sketch with an LLM (about 2 hours). One change per ask, read before you save, commit when it works.
  • Take notes as you go. At each stage, review the code and note what you discover: any tricks, anything you are curious about, what prompts work, what don’t, and learnings along the way. Add these to the dev notes. Hand-written notes are welcome too.
  • Ship it. Figure out how to push to GitHub and connect to Netlify. Follow these steps.

Reflect

While you are at it, think about these and drop your thoughts in the dev notes: What made you happy today? What left you more confused? What is your take on this kind of LLM-assisted learning? What else are you hoping for in week 2?
